CPE - Certificate of Proficiency in English (University of Cambridge, United Kingdom)

CPE is the highest level Cambridge ESOL exam, at level C2 of the Council of Europe's Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. Společného evropského referenčního rámce pro jazyky Those who pass this exam are able to function effectively in almost any English-speaking context and are approaching a standard of English similar to that of an educated native speaker.

This is an examination at an advanced level, which is recognised as fulfilling English language requirements by British universities and for business and academic purposes overseas.

Reading Comprehension: Candidates are expected to show comprehension of gist, detailed content, tone and register. They are also tested on their wider knowledge of vocabulary, usage and grammatical control.

Composition: Candidates must be able to write non-specialised texts of a descriptive, narrative and discursive nature covering a range of topics.

Use of English: Candidates are expected to demonstrate their knowledge and control of the language system by completing various tasks at text and sentence level. They are also required to read a text and answer comprehension questions and to summarise specified information from the text.

Listening Comprehension: Candidates are expected to extract information, interpret speakers’ attitudes and recognise the implications of stress and intonation. Texts take the form of announcements, dialogues, extracts from radio programmes, etc.

Interview: Candidates may be tested either individually, in pairs or in groups of three. They must be able to discuss and comment on issues and express opinions.

Special Interpreting State Examination (The Brno State Language School)

Written section of the exam verifies the following skills:
  • ability to understand spoken word focusing on life and institutions of the English speaking people and Czech Republic, total time 10 minutes
  • ability to write down in Czech a brief reproduction of a text spoken in English, total time 6 minutes (150 – 200 words)
  • ability to write down in English a brief reproduction of a text spoken in Czech, total time 6 minutes (400 – 500 words)

Oral section of the exam which takes 40 – 45 minutes verifies the following skills:

  • ability to speak in English readily, fluently and with correct grammar about given topics
  • ability to consecutively interpret a spoken or reproduced speech from English to Czech
  • ability to consecutively interpret a spoken or reproduced speech from Czech to English
